What we found looked like what everyone expected Geraldo Rivera to find when he opened Al Capone's vault on National TV. There were huge old bank bags full of coins... Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, Seated and Standing Liberty Half Dollars, Indian Heads, stacks of old currency and more. My grandfather lived through The Great Depression and fought with the Air Force during WWII. In the countless stories he used to tell me, there was one important fact that I learned about people who lived through The Great Depression and that era...They came out with a different mentality; a harder, more protective, saving mentality. A trait that they gained was hoarding.
They hoarded what valuables they could, because you never know when hard times will strike again. Our best guess is that this depression-era, save for a rainy day mentality is what led my grandfather to fill this safe. Thank you for reading my story.
